How Learning a New Language Improves Your Life, Friendships, and Career

Language is the foundation of human interaction. It allows us to convey ideas, instructions, humor, and even love for one another. Language can display intelligence, integrity, and even attractiveness to other people. And it can do this in both the verbal and written form. Recent studies suggest there are more than 7,000 different languages in the world today. But the 10 most common languages cover almost 50% of the world’s population. Whether it’s for your job, travel plans, or a new hobby – language gives you a better understanding of the world.

“One language sets you in a corridor for life.

Two languages open every door along the way.”

Frank Smith

In this article, we’re going to cover the key benefits of learning a new language. You’ll learn how it increases your career prospects. How it improves your memory and brain function. And how it’s invaluable during your child’s early development.

1) Language is the key to securing (and advancing) your career

Today’s job market is more international than ever before. Companies such as Grammer, Siemens, Conrad Electronic, and Adidas operate in multi-language environments. And they have offices all over the world. If English is your only language, you’re limiting your career opportunities. Securing a new position - or advancing from an existing one – can be very difficult or even impossible.

To succeed in a competitive market, you need skills that set you apart from the rest. German companies will often give preference to employees with strong German language skills. This improves workplace performance, as well as communication between employees and management. Speaking German also demonstrates a better understanding of German business culture

Employees who can’t speak German well are more likely to be perceived as lacking in professional skills.”

Managing director, German nursing company

German language skills are not only valuable in an office setting. Service-based industries like nursing, aged care, and hospitality also favor multi-lingual staff. If you’re currently working in Germany, it’s likely you already speak some of the language. But you’ll need more advanced skills to succeed in your current role - or advance to a higher one. To improve your career prospects, view our range of German language courses. Our programs cater to all people, from beginners to advanced speakers.

2) Language connects you to your own community

If you live in Germany but you can’t speak the language, life can be very difficult. Even the smallest things can pose a big challenge. Ordering a cup of coffee can feel daunting. Moving into a new apartment can be a headache. Speaking to someone on the phone can be almost impossible.

It’s easy to feel isolated and disconnected. Like you’re on the outside looking in. The good news is - you’re not alone. Many people have the same experience.

With languages, you are at home anywhere.”

Edmund de Waal

Even by learning basic German language skills, your daily life will improve immediately. But you’ll also make new friends and feel more welcome in your local community. When you’re shopping in a store – you’ll actually be able to talk with the staff. If you need directions, you’ll be able to ask someone. Answering the telephone will no longer be a stressful experience. Doors will start to open that you didn’t even realize were there. Learning to speak German is important for anyone living or traveling in Germany. It won’t just make your life easier – you’ll be much happier as well.

3) Bilingual children are smarter – and more successful

Speaking two languages like a native is rare and unique ability. If you’ve ever met someone who is truly bilingual, you understand how incredible it is. By improving your language skills, you can give your children a gift they’ll keep for life. Bilingual children don’t only have better career prospects. They display better social and cultural development - and even higher overall intelligence

"Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things,

but learning another way to think about things."

Flora Lewis

With the right training and attitude, any adult can become fluent in a second language. By passing this ability on to your children - they can develop language skills even better than your own. This improves their education, employment opportunities, and traveling experiences. It can even improve their brain function as they get older. By teaching your children a second language, you’re giving them a head-start in life. And setting them on a path to achieve real success.

4) Learning a new language is great for self-improvement

Many people view learning a new language as an enjoyable challenge. You can join a language school as a hobby, to meet new people, or with the goal to become fluent. No matter the reason – it’s a rewarding experience.

Learn everything you can, anytime you can, from anyone you can.

There will always come a time when you will be grateful you did.”

Sarah Caldwell

It’s also a great way to improve your self-esteem and confidence. You’ll also make new friends in a fun, social environment.

Some other benefits of learning a new language include:

  • Increased brain function and improved memory
  • Better understanding of another culture
  • Easier holiday and travelling experiences
  • Communication with foreign relatives
  • Accelerated learning of a 3rd or 4th language.

Studies have discovered that learning new languages can even delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. If you want to improve your language skills, view our range of courses held in locations all over Germany.
